Moving can be stressful at times so here is a list of our top ten tips to make things run as smoothly as possible…
1. Don’t Leave it until the Last Minute
Packing is stressful at the best of times so don’t wait until the final hour to get started and throw out belongings you no longer need or want, this will make unpacking so much easier!
2. Have a Clear Out
Take the time to properly assess everything you are packing as to whether you really need or want the item. You can then sell items through sites such as eBay, Etsy or Craiglist or arrange to donate items to a charity organization. Reducing your possesions cuts down on cost and time when moving day arrives.
3. Start Backwards
Pack up the rooms you use least initially, then you can use this for storage of boxes as you continue packing to avoid clutter throughout the house.
4. Handle with Care
Make sure to set aside fragile items for extra bubble wrap and protection, clearly mark box containing fragile items also as not everyone moving your boxes will be aware of exactly what’s inside!
5. Clearly Label Boxes
In addition to labelling fragile items, label boxes with the contents and assigned room can save a lot of time when unpacking.
6. Don’t Overload Boxes
It’s important to use smaller boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lighter items, the last thing you need is for the bottom of a box to fall out!
7. Use Sandwich Bags for Smaller Items
Keep sandwich bags handy for holding any small elements (i.e. screws) you have to take apart, like curtain rods or mounted flat-screen TVs. You can then tape the sandwich bags to the back of the item they are part. This works too with wires for electrical items. On another note, take a photo of electricals cables, such as on the back of your TV, before you remove them. This speeds up the process of reconnecting everything at the other end!
8. Documentation / Notifying Providers of Your Move
Keep all important document together and separate so that when you arrive it can be put in a safe place and doesn’t get lost in transit. Remember also when you move there are a whole host of companies and providers who need to be aware of your move – from all utility companies (water, gas, electric), internet and broadband providers, banks, insurances companies and doctors and dentists. This can avoid hassle further down the line!
9. Young Children
If you have young children it is worth packing an assigned box with essential items such as toys and bedding to keep them happy and occupied. Moving home can be very unsettling for young children so it’s important to have comforting items to hand.
