So, we’ve always known that Bristol is an amazingly active city made up of thousands of sport lovers and fitness fanatics…and so we are chuffed to bits to hear that Bristol has now been named as the UK’s European City of Sport for 2017!
The title is awarded by ACES Europe, a non-profit association based in Brussels who has been running the award scheme since 2001 and “Women in Sport” is to be the theme for the year.
There is an outstanding programme of sporting events being lined up for next year with the Women’s Cricket World Cup already planned for the Bristol County Ground and lots more to come with the aim being to build on the success of this year’s “This Girl Can” campaign.
“This Girl Can” is a campaign developed by Sport England in celebration of active women up and down the country “who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their faces get”. Following on from this, we now have the wonderful “Bristol Girls Can” which has been set up by eight amazing local ladies whose aim is to build a community of active women within the city and break down any barriers that may be surrounding the idea of exercise. Check out their Facebook page for news of local events and do not miss this inspiring video about how the campaign has helped local women so far.
On top of this, the Mayor has said that he particularly wants to emphasise the importance of community sport and will be making donations to various sports projects throughout the city too.
Bristol…we just love you more and more!
