So, one of the hundreds of reasons I think that we Bristolians are just so lucky to live here is the fantastic access we have to some of the most beautiful parts of the UK. With the likes of the Mendips, Cotswolds, Brecon Beacons, Devon and of course the wonderful Cornwall all within easy driving distance, we are completely spoilt for choice when it comes to new places to explore.
I ventured down to the Roseland peninsula in Cornwall a couple of weeks back with my husband and if anyone out there is looking for an exceptionally lovely village to visit then look no further than the beautiful St Mawes. The fishing village itself is small and does not take long to navigate but the very fact that it is traditional and unspoiled is what gives it its wonderful charm. With a tea room, bakery, lovely family run deli, fish and chip shop (The Watch House – an absolute must if you go, both for the chippy and the restaurant), several pubs and restaurants and a fantastically fancy hotel on the waterfront for cocktails overlooking the water, there is something in St Mawes for everybody.
As in most places along the Cornish coast, the Roseland offers walks a plenty to suit all abilities with trails to the hidden church in St Just and the lighthouse and hidden beach coves on St Anthony Head being particular highlights of our trip. For those wanting to go a little further afield, there are boat trips which run out of the harbour across to Falmouth with all sorts of day/tour packages on offer and plenty of places to visit a little further inland too.
St Mawes was my first visit to Cornwall and I think it’s safe to say that it will not be my last as I just loved every minute of it… Next on my list is Dartmoor in neighbouring Devon and I’m looking forward to getting booked up already!
