Ever get to work and feel immediately lethargic or grumpy? According to recent studies, up to a whopping 1 in 10 of us skip breakfast in the mornings and this is one of the leading causes in us feeling tired, lacking in energy and generally low during the course of the day.
Skipping meals is a common misconception, particularly if people are dieting as they believe that it will help in losing weight and still be able to cope with a busy or stressful day. This is not true!! Food is our fuel and without it our bodies cannot function properly. Missing breakfast can often result in low blood sugar which will make us reach for a quick (often sugary) snack for instant gratification and a boost. Snacks like these are often higher in calories than a normal breakfast would have been and so actually can have an adverse effect on weight levels over time.
Poor diet contributes not only to a significant reduction in productivity (this can drop by up to 20% through bad nutrition) but can also cause low levels in morale and a bit of a blue outlook on things in general.
Breakfast does not have to be difficult! There are plenty of tasty recipes about which make a great start to the day (there are some particularly good ones online at BBC Good Food).
Things are just better all round when we’re energised and full of beans… Easter is out of the way and sunshine will soon be here so let’s all start a summer health kick today!
