A new law requiring the installation of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors by October has been passed in attempts to reduce the number of annual house fire deaths. This comes after figures indicating that around 38% of house fire deaths occurred in houses without a smoke alarm. Although the new law means landlords must install smoke alarms in all their properties and check them at the start of every tenancy, it falls on the tenants to regularly test them. Penalties for failing to install both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors could, as of October, incur a fine of £5000.
