As we come into the busy summer season, we know that there will be lots of you out there moving home so we have compiled a list of our top tips to ensure that your moving day runs nice and smoothly…
Declutter…
There is no better time to get rid of all of those bits and pieces you don’t really need. By having a good sort out you can see what you are going to be moving into your new home and decide if you really need it any longer.
Label everything up properly!
It might sound like a bit of a given, but labelling your boxes properly can save you an awful lot of hassle when you arrive at your new home. Write the room they are destined for onto the top and side of each box so that you can see this easily when they are all stacked up along with a brief description of what’s inside. Try colour coding each room too and this will make sorting boxes at the other end even easier.
Move your furniture in first
Move all of your big furniture items into your new place first so that you avoid moving all of your boxes to make room. Make sure you have all screws/bolts from bits of furniture properly separated too so that you can put them together easily upon arrival (a great tip for this is to put all bits and pieces into freezer bags and then to stick them to the relevant pieces of furniture so you know exactly what’s what).
Have your essentials at the ready
After a day of shifting boxes and/or furniture into a new property, there are a few essentials that you are going to need so it is important to make sure that they are easy to find and ready to use! Label a separate box for this and make sure it includes things like kettle, tea and coffee, milk, sugar, biscuits…etc, phone chargers, house paperwork, vase (a lovely friend or family member will inevitably offer welcome flowers), bottle of wine with glasses and corkscrew, snacks and if you have any, takeaway menus for places nearby to where you are moving.
Prepare an overnight bag
The last thing you want to do on the first night in your new home is spend half of the evening looking for your pyjamas and toothbrush. Pack an overnight bag with a change of clothes and any toiletries you might need along with towels, bedding and blow up beds if required. For those with children, keep favourite toys and teddies at the ready and for pets, have food water bowl, bed and toys separate too so that they are able to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings as quickly as possible.
Redirect your post
Set a redirection up with the Post Office before you move so that you don’t have to worry about collecting old bills/letters…etc from your previous address once you have moved.
Pre-order your food shopping
Once you and all of your belongings are in, you are going to have plenty to do without having to think about going to the supermarket for supplies. Pre-order some basics to be delivered the day after you have collected your keys so that you can fill your kitchen cupboards easily and not have to worry about dinner plans whilst unpacking your belongings and settling into your new home.
Good luck with your move everyone…make sure you let us know how you get on!
